Traffic signs play a crucial role in maintaining road safety and guiding drivers and pedestrians. But have you ever wondered how these signs are securely installed, standing tall and resilient against the elements and the test of time? The answer lies in a vital component known as the U channel post. In this blog post, we'll delve into the significance of the U channel in traffic sign installation and explore the key steps to securely anchor a sign post in the ground.
The Importance of U Channel Posts
U channel posts are sturdy, galvanized steel or powder coated posts that provide the backbone for traffic sign installations. These posts are called "U channel" due to their shape resembling the letter "U" when viewed from the side. There are a Number of Breakaway Sign Post Options Available for Both Square Tube and U Channel Sign Posts
The type of sign post, the size of your sign post, and the size of the sign that your post needs to support, along with other factors, like wind velocity all go into determining which breakaway sign post system will be best suited to your specific sign support scenario. In some cases, you might even need multiple sign posts to support a single sign. You should always refer to the breakaway sign post deatail provided by the sign post manufacturer and the manufacturer of the breakaway hardware, coupler, or base system when determining which solution to use - in some cases they are the same manufacturer. Visit our Sign Post Literature Library for details and specifications.

A Traffic Sign is Commonly Mounted on a Single Square Tubing Sign Post
The most typical square tube widths we sell are 1.5", 1.75", and 2". The vast majority of traffic signs are manufactured out of .080 aluminum - that's just eight one-hundredths of an inch! - with two holes, on center, for mounting to your sign post. The traffic sign sizes we sell most frequently are 12" x 18", 24" x 24", 36" x 36", and 48" x 48". That's quite a range in surface area!
How to Measure the Surface Area of a Traffic Sign
Multiply the width (in inches) by the height (in inches) and then divide by 144 (12" x 12" = 144" - or one square foot)
- A 12" x 18" sign covers 1.5 square feet
- A 48" x 48" sign covers 16 square feet
Both of these signs are mounted exactly the same way, attached to a single sign post - that's maybe 2" wide - with 2 bolts or drive rivets, right through

Yes - Portable Sign Stands do add safety to parking lots
But they also add safety to a variety of applications other than parking lots. Portable Sign Stands are perfect for any area where car and foot traffic intermingle. They organize the flow of traffic and instruct vehicle and foot traffic how to behave -with the right sign, of course!
When traffic patterns are compromised during stop light failures or power outages, even low speed roads can become very dangerous. Another great use for portable sign stands is for temporary traffic control. Now you can turn a stop light intersection free-for-all into a four way stop, mitigating chaos caused by broken stop lights and preventing accidents and injuries.
